Background - 2029: Cybers

 Cybers

            General
Cybers are paras who have powers over computers, software and the like.  A cyber, for instance can actually physically project themselves into a computer and it's operating system

            Powers
They can also simply "read" said system with their fingers.  They can do the same to robots and androids.

            They can break any encryption.

They can rewrite software.  Disable it.  Implant worms and viruses as well as remove them.

They can pick up wireless internet data, right out of the air (though it helps to be in a WiFi hotspot).

If there's a way to pull info off a dead computer, hard drive, or disk, a cyber can do it.

Average powers can tackle most encription, can "embed" themselves into a computer or laptop for up to about two weeks at a time or so, actually living in the cyber environment.  Most average strength cybers can pluck data out of the air at WiFi hotspots, disable most viruses, create worms and viruses themselves and rewrite most types of software.  Strong cybers take all of this to another level while weak cybers have powers that are generally more simplistic and limited.

The data they collect and store in their brain is generally immune to computer viruses.

            Weaknesses and Limitations
After having "embedded" in a computer, many cybers take some time to readjust to being in human form again.

Can get trapped in a computer if the computer's power is shut off.  Can only embed into and resolve out of computers that are turned on.

Are strongly affected by electrical shocks.  Electrical shocks can cause them to not only lose all the data they've "stored" in their brain, but can cause them to lose their power altogether.

Even the strongest cyber's tend to leave a trail, with distinctive footprints, in the computers and software they've infiltrated.  All it takes is the time and effort to track it down.

            Legal
Cybers are faced with a lot of laws governing their abilities.  Unauthorized entry and/or tampering with computer systems is illegal.  Cyber-theft laws have been amended, pretty much everywhere to address cybers.  Many states don't allow cybers to own computers of any kind.  Others prevent cybers from going to any place that is a WiFi hot spot.

            Lifestyle
Due to legal restrictions on them, many cybers choose not to register with the PRA.  Many tech companies, intel agencies, defense agencies and law enforcement agencies apply for "waivers" that allow them to employ cybers to work for the "public good".  Many criminal organizations and terror organizations are always on the look out to recruit cybers.

Some cyvbers spend so much time in and on computers that they have no "real life".

An urban legend holds that all cybers are prototypical "computer geeks".  While this can be true, it's more often not true.

            Side Effects
A disease known as binary syndrome affects some cybers causing them to only communicate in binary code, as they seem to completely lose the ability to communicate in any other fashion.

Acute Technophobia is another condition that strikes some cybers.  It manifests itself as a sudden overwhelming fear of any and all technology and technological devices.  Cybers who suffer from it can sometimes have nervous breakdowns.  Many wind up purging themselves of any and all tech in an effort to live off the grid.

Greenscreen syndrome is another condition that sometimes effects cybers, causing some to lose the ability to see in normal colors.  Those affected wind up seeing the world in "greenscreen", similar to a computer screen.

Can be affected by "loose" code, computer code that winds up running free in their minds, dsitracting them and keeping them from getting any sleep.

Some cybers get so caught up with being in the cyber world that they get depressed about living in regular human form.

            Other Paras
Telepaths find it near impossible to read cyber's.  All they tend to see is a constant flow of binary numbers that make no sense.

A cyber in your computer is next to impossible to detect, even for very sensitive paras.

Vampyres who've fed on cybers complain that they have a bitter, silicon taste to them.
